FM27 scouting and recruitment

Set up FM27 scouting properly: assignments, scout attributes, recruitment focuses, report reading and the shortlist that finds wonderkids first.

FM27 scouting and recruitment

Scouting is the part of FM27 that most managers skip. They search the player list, filter by value, and sign whoever the game already knows about. That is exactly the pool every AI club is looking at. The advantage comes from knowing about players before they are famous, and from reading a scout report well enough to reject the ones who will not make it.

FM27 adds a recruitment screen with Tactical Effectiveness gauges, so the scout report now tells you whether a target fits your system, not just how good he is.

The scouting department

You start with a chief scout and a handful of scouts. Their attributes decide what you see:

Attribute What it does
Judging Player Ability Accuracy of the current-ability rating
Judging Player Potential Accuracy of the potential rating
Tactical Knowledge Quality of the tactical fit assessment
Adaptability How well the scout works in a new country
Determination How quickly the assignment is completed
Motivating How many players a scout can handle at once

A scout with 18 judging potential and 8 adaptability is better used at home. A scout with 14/14 and 18 adaptability is the one you send to Brazil.

Assignments

There are four assignment types, and each has a different job.

Nation assignment. Sends a scout to a country for a period. Good for building knowledge of a league you intend to buy from, but slow.

Region assignment. Broader and cheaper. Useful for a first sweep of South America or Scandinavia.

Competition assignment. Watches a specific league. The best value for a club shopping in one market.

Player assignment. Watches one target. Expensive per player, but the report is deeper and arrives faster.

The mistake is to send every scout to a different continent. A club with four scouts should cover two markets properly, not four badly.

Scout the league you will actually buy from

If your budget is £10m, you are not signing from the Premier League. Send your best scout to the Portuguese, Dutch, Belgian or Brazilian league, and keep him there for three seasons.

Recruitment focuses

Recruitment focuses are saved searches. You set the position, age range, attributes and budget, and the scouting team returns candidates.

A good focus is narrow:

  • Position and role, not just position.
  • Age 16–21 for prospects, 23–27 for starters.
  • One or two key attributes at a high threshold.
  • A wage ceiling that fits the squad structure.

A focus with ten attribute filters returns nothing. A focus with three returns a shortlist you can actually scout.

Reading a report

A scout report has four parts:

  1. Current ability. How good the player is now, as a star rating relative to your squad.
  2. Potential. The ceiling, with a confidence range. A 4.5-star potential with a wide range is less certain than a 4-star with a narrow range.
  3. Tactical fit. The FM27 addition: whether the player suits your shape, role and instructions. A great player in the wrong system will show as a poor fit.
  4. Personality and injury record. The part that decides whether the potential is reachable.

The star rating is relative to your squad, not absolute. A 3-star player at a Champions League club is a 5-star player at a mid-table club. Always read the rating in context.

Data and the shortlist

FM27's data hub gives you passing, dribbling, xG and xA numbers, split by short, medium and long passes. Use it to sanity-check a scout report:

  • A striker with high xG but low goals may be unlucky or a poor finisher.
  • A winger with high dribbles but low xA creates nothing at the end of the run.
  • A defender with high pass completion but low progressive passes is passing sideways.

The shortlist is where the data and the reports meet. Keep it short — 15 to 25 names — and update it every window. A shortlist of 100 players is a list you will never read.

Finding wonderkids first

The edge in FM27 is timing. A wonderkid becomes expensive the moment he plays a senior season. The clubs that sign him cheaply are the ones that knew about him at 16.

Three habits:

  1. Scout the youth leagues. The under-19 and B-team competitions in Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands and Belgium are full of 16-year-olds who will be £30m players in two years.
  2. Check the NXGN 50. FM27 shows the list in your inbox. It is a shortcut, but every AI club reads it too, so use it as a starting point, not a shortlist.
  3. Watch the contract expiry. A 17-year-old with 12 months left is the cheapest signing in the game. The cheap wonderkid guide lists the ones on low wages, and the free agent list covers the senior players who cost nothing.

Trials and the eye test

You can offer trials to free agents and youth players. A trial gives you a direct look at the player in your own squad, and it costs nothing.

Use trials for:

  • Free agents you are unsure about.
  • Teenagers from smaller leagues who have no scouting report.
  • Players returning from long injuries.

A good trial is two weeks with one friendly. If the player cannot impress against a lower-league side, he will not impress in the first team.

Scouting and Tactical Effectiveness

The recruitment screen shows the Tactical Effectiveness gauge for a target. A player who fits the system will integrate faster and reach the tactical understanding pillar sooner. A player with better attributes but a poor fit can lower the squad's effectiveness for a month.

That trade-off is the central decision of FM27 recruitment: the best player available, or the best player for the tactic. For a club with time, the fit wins. For a club that needs results now, the ability wins.

A scouting setup that works

For a mid-table club with four scouts:

Scout Assignment Market
Chief scout Competition: Primeira Liga Portugal
Scout 2 Competition: Eredivisie Netherlands
Scout 3 Nation: Brazil South America
Scout 4 Nation: England (under-21) Domestic

Review the shortlist every month, not every window. The players you want will be gone by the window if you start looking in January.
