How to spend an FM27 transfer budget: instalments, clauses, loans with options, wage structure and the deadline-day decisions that backfire.
FM27 transfers and budgets
A transfer budget is not a number. It is a set of trade-offs: fee against wage, now against later, first team against resale. FM27 gives you a budget screen and a wage budget, and the two are linked. Spend the fee and the wage bill rises; spend the wage bill and the fee available next season shrinks.
This guide covers how to structure a deal, when to walk away, and how to use the loan market without hollowing out the squad.
Read the budget screen properly
The budget screen shows four numbers that matter:
- Transfer budget. The cash available for fees this window.
- Wage budget. The weekly ceiling for the squad.
- Remaining wage budget. What is left after current contracts.
- Projected balance. Whether the club will be in debt at the end of the season.
Most new managers spend the transfer budget and ignore the wage line. A £20m signing on £120k a week costs more over four years than a £30m signing on £60k a week. The second is usually the better deal.
Fee plus four years of wages is the real price. A free agent on £80k a week costs £16.6m over four years. A £10m signing on £30k costs £16.2m. The free agent is not free.

Structuring the fee
Four tools change the cash flow of a deal.
Instalments. Spreading a fee over two or three years lowers the immediate cost and preserves this window's budget. The selling club usually accepts instalments for a fee above its valuation, so you pay a premium for the flexibility.
Clauses. Appearance, goal and sell-on clauses reduce the upfront fee. A 20% sell-on is worth giving away for a player you intend to keep; it is expensive for a player you intend to flip.
Bonuses. Promotion and trophy bonuses are cheap if the club is not expected to win anything. Use them to bridge a valuation gap.
Agent fees. Agents ask for a percentage of the deal. A lower agent fee can be traded for a higher wage, or the reverse. Check the total cost, not the headline fee.
Wage structure
The fastest way to ruin a squad is to break the wage hierarchy for one signing. Existing players will ask for parity at the next contract negotiation, and the bill compounds.
A workable structure for a mid-table club:
| Squad status | Weekly wage band |
|---|---|
| Star player | £90k–£140k |
| First-team regular | £50k–£90k |
| Rotation | £25k–£50k |
| Prospect | £5k–£25k |
| Youth | £500–£5k |
Keep the top of the band for one or two players. If a new signing demands more than the current best player earns, either sell the current best player or walk away.
Loans
Loans are the best value in the game and the most misused. Three types:
- Short-term cover. A senior player on a wage-share loan for six months. Useful when an injury leaves a hole.
- Development loan. A young player sent to a lower-league club for regular starts. The wonderkid guide explains who needs one.
- Loan with an option to buy. The best structure for a player you are not sure about. You pay a loan fee, see him for a season, then decide.
The trap is the loan with an obligation to buy. If the obligation triggers on appearances and the player is injured, you have bought a player you cannot use. Read the clause before you accept.
Selling
Selling is harder than buying. Three rules:
- Sell before the window closes, not on the last day. The replacement needs time to settle.
- Do not sell to a rival in the same league unless the fee is exceptional. The AI values the advantage.
- Use the sell-on clause as a discount. A 10% sell-on can knock 15–20% off the fee for a player who wants to leave.
If a player is unhappy and refuses to train, the market value drops. Accept a lower fee rather than let the squad morale collapse.
Deadline day
Deadline day is where budgets are wasted. The AI clubs panic, the fees rise, and the player you sign at 11pm has no time to train with the squad.
A better approach:
- Identify your targets in the first week of the window.
- Complete the two most important deals before the season starts.
- Keep 15% of the budget for an injury replacement.
- On deadline day, only sign if a starter is injured or a target becomes available at a discount.
The exception is a loan. A deadline-day loan costs little and can cover an injury without a long-term commitment.
Registration and squad rules
Every league has a registration limit. In England, the 25-man squad rule applies to the Premier League, and homegrown quotas affect European competition. Check the squad screen before you buy:
- Non-homegrown limit. A squad full of foreign signings will not be registerable.
- Under-21 rule. Players under 21 often do not count against the 25-man limit, which makes wonderkids doubly valuable.
- Work permits. Post-Brexit, non-UK players need a GBE. The cheap wonderkid page covers the loan-abroad workaround.
A window plan
For a club with £40m and a mid-table squad:
| Priority | Spend | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Starting striker | £15m | Permanent, 4-year deal |
| Ball-playing centre-back | £10m | Permanent, instalments |
| Left-back cover | £0 | Loan with option |
| Wonderkid midfielder | £8m | Permanent, low wage |
| Reserve keeper | £0 | Free agent |
| Contingency | £7m | Held for January |
That is five holes filled, one long-term asset, and a reserve for the winter window. The free agent guide lists the keepers and defenders who cost nothing, and the scouting guide explains how to find the targets before the AI does.
