Minimum and recommended FM27 PC specs, the laptop chips that qualify, Mac support and what to upgrade first if your machine struggles.
FM27 system requirements
Football Manager 27 is not a demanding game in the way a shooter is. It is demanding in memory and storage: the 2026/27 database is enormous, the match engine now renders more detail, and the recommended spec asks for 12GB of RAM and a discrete GPU. The install is 20GB on both the minimum and recommended tiers.
The official requirements, as listed on the Steam store page:
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit | Windows 11, 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i3-530 / AMD FX-4100 | Intel Core i5-9600 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600 |
| Laptop CPU | Intel i3-330M / AMD A6-5200 | Intel i5-1035G7 / AMD Ryzen 7 3750H |
| RAM | 6GB | 12GB |
| GPU | GTX 960 / R9 380 / Intel HD 530 | RTX 2060 / RX 5600 XT |
| VRAM | 1GB, Shader Model 5.0 | 2GB |
| DirectX | 11 | 11 |
| Storage | 20GB | 20GB |
Two footnotes matter. The CPU must support SSE4.2 and SSSE3, which rules out some very old Core 2 and early Athlon parts. And the GPU needs Shader Model 5.0; a card that technically has 1GB but no SM5 support will not launch.
What the minimum actually feels like
The minimum is a launch spec, not a comfort spec. On a GTX 960 with 6GB of RAM, the game runs, but three things degrade:
- Match days. The 2D engine is fine; the 3D engine drops detail and the crowd becomes a texture. Highlights still play.
- Processing. With a large database and several leagues loaded, advancing a day takes noticeably longer. The game is CPU-bound between matches, not GPU-bound.
- Multitasking. 6GB is the floor for Windows plus the game. A browser with twenty tabs will push you into swap.
If you are on the minimum, load fewer leagues and use a medium database. The lower league guide assumes a small save anyway.

The laptop trap
Laptop chips with the same name as desktop chips are not the same. The requirements list laptop-specific parts, which is helpful: an i5-1035G7 is a 15W part and will process slower than a desktop i5-9600 despite the similar number. An RTX 2060 laptop GPU is also a cut-down version.
What this means in practice:
- A modern thin-and-light with 16GB of RAM and integrated graphics will run the 2D engine and a small database. It will struggle with the 3D match engine at anything above low.
- A gaming laptop from the last four years with 16GB and a discrete GPU is comfortably above recommended.
- 8GB of RAM is the most common bottleneck. If your laptop has 8GB and a slot free, adding 8GB is the cheapest upgrade available.
Intel HD 530 is the minimum integrated chip. Iris Xe and AMD Radeon 680M/780M are faster and will run the game, but the 3D engine will still be the first thing to drop. If you play in 2D only, integrated graphics are viable.
Mac support
FM27 ships natively on macOS, including Apple Silicon. The store lists the same 20GB install and the same 12GB recommended memory. There is no separate Mac page with different numbers, which is a change from the years when the Mac build lagged behind.
On an M1 MacBook Air with 8GB, expect the game to run but the memory pressure to be visible during long processing sessions. On 16GB, it is comfortable.
What to upgrade first
If you are below spec, upgrade in this order.
- RAM. Going from 8GB to 16GB costs less than any other component and fixes the most common stutter. FM27's database lives in memory.
- SSD. The 20GB install plus save files plus the match engine cache benefit from an SSD. A mechanical drive makes loading and saving painful.
- CPU. Processing speed is single-thread heavy. A newer i5 or Ryzen 5 matters more than more cores.
- GPU. Only if you play 3D matches and care about the visuals. The 2D engine runs on almost anything with SM5.
A GPU upgrade is the worst value for this game. A CPU upgrade is the best, followed by RAM.
Steam Deck and handhelds
FM27 is not listed as Steam Deck Verified. The Windows build can run through Proton, but the game's interface is dense and the on-screen keyboard is awkward for squad screens. If a handheld is your only machine, expect to play in 2D and to use the touchscreen sparingly.
The same applies to Windows handhelds: they meet the minimum on paper, and the match engine runs, but the text is small.
Common launch problems
The game will not start on a laptop with switchable graphics. Force the discrete GPU in the driver control panel. The game does not always pick it automatically.
The game stutters on the first match. Shader compilation. Play one match, then restart.
The database feels slow after a few seasons. Save bloat is real. Use the in-game database maintenance options, and avoid loading twenty leagues you never watch.
Mac users on older Intel machines. The native build needs Metal-capable hardware. Check the store page for the exact cutoff before buying.
Is your machine good enough
A quick rule: if your machine runs FM24 comfortably, it will run FM27 at similar settings with one notch less detail in 3D and a slightly slower processing speed. The database grew, but the engine did not become a different class of software.
If your machine ran FM24 badly, FM27 will not fix it. The price page is the place to check what the game costs before you commit, and the release date page covers the preview window, which is the cheapest way to test your hardware before buying.
