FM27 wonderkid defenders

Defenders are the least glamorous wonderkid purchase and the most reliable. A centre-back with a 90 ceiling will hold his value, play every week and fit almost any system. A winger with the same ceiling might lose half his value if he cannot beat a full-back.

The tables below cover every defender in the database rated 81 or higher, split by position. Ratings are potential scores, not current ability.

Centre-backs

Player Age Club Nation Potential
Luka Vušković 19 Brighton Croatia 91
Pau Cubarsí 19 Barcelona Spain 90
Finn Jeltsch 19 VfB Stuttgart Germany 87
Jon Martín 20 Real Sociedad Spain 86
Joane Gadou 19 Dortmund France 85
Ayden Heaven 19 Man Utd England 85
Matteo Palma 18 Udinese Germany 84
Axel Koukaba 16 PSG France 84
Tom Atcheson 19 Blackburn Northern Ireland 84
Deinner Ordóñez 16 Independiente del Valle Ecuador 84
Leo Lemaitre 17 Real Madrid France 84
Leny Yoro 20 Man Utd France 84
Axel Tape 18 Leverkusen France 84
Noahkai Banks 19 Augsburg Germany 84

The ready-made pair. Vušković and Cubarsí are the two best young centre-backs in the game, and they are different players: Vušković is the aggressive header, Cubarsí is the reader. Together they would be the best defensive partnership in any save. Separately, each needs a partner who complements him.

The bargains. Ordóñez at Independiente del Valle and Koukaba at PSG are 16 with 84 ceilings and wages under £100 a week. They will not be ready for three years, but they cost almost nothing and can be loaned out immediately.

The English route. Heaven, Atcheson and Banks are all 84 and all available for fees a Championship club could structure. Atcheson at Blackburn is the cheapest of the three because he is already in the Championship.

Left-backs

Player Age Club Nation Potential
Saba Kharebashvili 17 Başakşehir Georgia 88
Davinchi 18 Getafe Spain 85
Honest Ahanor 18 Atalanta Italy 85
José Neto 18 Benfica Portugal 84
Jorrel Hato 20 Chelsea Netherlands 84
Dayann Méthalie 20 Sunderland France 84
Mikel Urrestarazu 17 Athletic Club Spain 84
Jordi Pesquer 17 Barcelona Spain 83
Jofre Torrents 19 Ajax Spain 83
Stephen Mfuni 18 Man City England 83
Thato Sibiya 20 Sundowns South Africa 83
Jorge Salinas 19 Racing Santander Spain 82
Mohanad El Shamy 17 Al-Ahly Egypt 82
Louis Lemke 16 Hamburg Germany 81

Kharebashvili is the standout: 88 at 17, already playing senior football in Turkey, and a fee that is a fraction of what a Premier League left-back costs. He is the best value defender on this page.

Right-backs

Player Age Club Nation Potential
Jesús Fortea 19 Real Madrid Spain 86
Xavi Espart 19 Barcelona Spain 86
Daniel Banjaqui 18 Benfica Portugal 86
Kyllian Antonio 18 Lens France 85
Ângelo 17 São Paulo Brazil 84
Daniel Nnodim 18 Austria Vienna Germany 84
Héctor Fort 19 Real Sociedad Spain 83
Josh Acheampong 20 Chelsea England 83
Kauã Moraes 19 Cruzeiro Brazil 83
Kosta Nedeljković 20 Aston Villa Serbia 82

Right-back is the deepest position in the database. There are four players at 85 or above, and the cheapest of them, Antonio at Lens, is also the most physically ready.

What kind of defender your system needs

The engine punishes a defender who is asked to do the wrong job more than it punishes a lack of quality.

High line: acceleration, recovery pace, composure on the ball. Vušković, Cubarsí, Yoro and Hato fit.

Low block: heading, bravery, positioning, strength. Jeltsch, Palma and Banks fit.

Back three: wide centre-backs need to step out and cover the channel; the middle one needs to organise. Ahanor and Mfuni are natural wide centre-backs.

Attacking full-back: stamina, crossing, off-the-ball movement. Kharebashvili, Fortea and Banjaqui fit.

Defensive full-back: tackling, positioning, concentration. Fort, Nedeljković and Sibiya fit.

Do not buy two identical centre-backs

Two aggressive headers leave space behind. Two readers get bullied. The best partnerships are complementary, and the effectiveness gauge rewards the balance more than the individual ratings.

Development notes

Defenders develop later than attackers but more predictably. A centre-back at 19 with 87 potential will usually be a starter at 23, not at 20. Plan for a loan at 19–20 and a squad role at 21.

Full-backs develop faster because the physical attributes arrive earlier. A 17-year-old left-back with senior minutes can be a rotation option immediately.

The individual training focus should target the attribute the role depends on most:

  • Centre-back in a high line: acceleration and composure.
  • Centre-back in a low block: heading and strength.
  • Attacking full-back: crossing and stamina.
  • Defensive full-back: positioning and concentration.

Who to avoid

The 20-year-old with no senior minutes. A defender who has not played by 20 is behind the curve. Check appearance history.

The small centre-back in a low block. Height matters for aerial duels. A 180cm centre-back can be excellent in a high line and a liability against a target forward.

The full-back who cannot defend. The engine will find him. If tackling and positioning are both poor, he is a winger playing out of position.

A realistic shopping list

For a mid-table club with £40m:

  • One centre-back at 87+ for the first XI (Vušković or Jeltsch).
  • One left-back at 84+ for rotation (Neto or Urrestarazu).
  • One right-back at 85+ as a long-term starter (Antonio or Banjaqui).
  • One 16-year-old at 84 for the under-21s (Ordóñez or Koukaba).

That is a defence for the next eight years, and it costs less than one elite senior centre-back. The cheap wonderkids page has the wage data, and the formations page explains which defensive roles each shape asks for.
